Planning Ahead: Dental Work before Retirement

If you’re planning on retiring in the next 5 years, congratulations! Also, it’s time to start thinking about making sure your dental needs are taken care of. Many people wait until they’re about to retire to try and squeeze in needed dental work.

Retirement

If you’re within the 5-year range, it’s a great idea to let your dentist know so we can create a functional treatment plan that utilizes your dental insurance benefits while you still have them.

Enjoy Retirement Free of Worry

Enjoy retirement free of worry about dental concerns by completing necessary treatment beforehand.

If you have older fillings that are starting to cause the teeth to crack or crowns with failing margins, now is the time to start updating them. Some of your teeth may require crowns and by starting to update them sooner than later, you’re able to spread your cost out over time.

Dental Insurance Benefits

After retirement many folks will lose their dental insurance benefits. You may not realize before it’s too late that medicare doesn’t include dental coverage. Some medicare advantage plans do, but are often limited to preventive coverage.

Preventive procedures are generally restricted to limited x-rays, exams, and cleaning. Treatment such as fillings, crowns, root canals, etc. would be completely your responsibility. This can be quite costly without any coverage from insurance.

Good Oral Hygiene

This is also the time to establish good oral hygiene habits. An ideal homecare routine is to brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoridated toothpaste and use an interdental cleaning aid such as dental floss or a water flosser once a day.

Another aid could be changing to an electric toothbrush. This can be incredibly helpful with improving oral hygiene, especially if you are having any issues with your joints. Dry mouth can also become an issue as we get older.

We off dry mouth kits, just make sure to mention to your dentist or hygienist you’re interested and they will review what we have to offer. Ensuring you’re doing as much as you can at home will decrease the likelihood that you will need dental treatment in retirement.

If retirement is in your near future it’s a good time to be thinking about how you’re going to spend your remaining years of dental benefits. Let us know so that we can help you maximize your coverage over the coming years and sail into retirement without worrying about your teeth!
